Today, you get certified on it.

Today is about being actually cleared to use specific tools on your own, not just recognizing that they're dangerous.

Today's Format

  1. Your instructor demonstrates each tool you'll need
  2. You practice under direct supervision
  3. You take a certification quiz on today's protocols

Passing score: 100%.

Repeatable until you pass. 100% isn't a punishment — it's the standard, because partial safety knowledge isn't safe knowledge.

Certification is per-tool, not blanket.

Passing today clears you on what was demonstrated today. Need a new tool later this semester? You get shown that one too, the same way.

Step 1: Tool Demonstrations

Your instructor will demonstrate each tool or machine you'll need access to this semester. Watch the full demonstration before attempting anything yourself.

Step 2: Supervised Practice

Under your instructor's direct supervision, practice the specific safe-use steps for each tool demonstrated.

Step 3: Record Your Protocol Notes

For each tool demonstrated, write down:

  • The tool's name
  • The one non-negotiable rule for using it
  • What to do if something goes wrong

Step 4: Certification Quiz

A quiz on today's protocols, administered by your instructor. Passing score is 100%, and it's repeatable until you get there — this isn't about a single attempt, it's about actually knowing the protocol before you're cleared to use the tool alone.

Before you're cleared to use any tool independently, all three must be true:

  • You watched the full demonstration for that tool
  • You practiced it under direct supervision
  • You passed the certification quiz at 100%

Missing any one of these means you're not cleared yet — that's not a technicality, it's the actual standard.

  1. Pick one tool demonstrated today. What's the one non-negotiable rule for using it safely?
  2. Why do you think the passing standard for this quiz is 100% instead of something like 80%?
  3. Session 6 introduces calipers, a precision measurement tool. Is precision measurement itself ever a safety issue, or is it purely about design quality?
