Your First Cuts and Fasteners

Most of You Have Never Done This

Never cut a board. Never run a drill. That is the assumption this course starts from, not something to admit to.

Everything today gets taught from the beginning — which end to hold, which way to turn it, what the numbers mean.

In this course safety is a graded competency, the same as measurement or documentation.

Before You Touch Anything

  • Safety glasses on, every time, no exceptions
  • Sleeves, drawstrings, and long hair secured
  • No phone, no earbuds at a machine
  • One person at a machine — the operator

If You Don't Know, Ask Before You Touch It

Every single time. No exceptions, no matter how simple the machine looks.

Nobody in this room has ever been in trouble for asking. That is not true of the alternative.

Cleanup Is Part of the Job

The space gets returned to the state you found it — stock racked, offcuts cleared, surfaces brushed down, tools back where they live.

This is scored today and every shop day after it. A build that leaves a mess is not a finished build.

What You Are Building Today

Four pieces of 2×4, cut at 45 degrees, drilled and screwed into a square frame.

Small on purpose. The frame is not the point — the two machines that make it are.

The Compound Miter Saw

A blade that drops through stock held against a fence. It cuts square, and it cuts at an angle you set.

Stock stays clamped or held firmly against the fence, never floating.

Hands stay outside the marked zone. If a cut needs a hand inside it, the piece is too short to cut this way — stop and ask.

Let the blade come to a full stop before lifting. Raising it early is how a good cut turns into a thrown offcut.

Four Corners, 360 Degrees

Each corner is two 45 degree cuts meeting at 90. Four corners have to add up to a closed square.

So what happens if one cut is off by a degree?

The frame does not close. You get a gap at the last corner, and you can see it from across the room.

Nothing averages out. Every corner carries its own error into the next one, and the last joint pays for all of them.

Drill or Impact Driver?

They look similar and they are not interchangeable.

Drill — makes holes. Smooth, steady rotation, and a chuck that grips any round bit.

Impact driver — drives fasteners. It hammers as it turns, so a long screw sinks without stripping the head or twisting your wrist.

The Chuck Is Hand-Tightened

Bit goes in straight and centered, then you grip the collar and turn until it is firm.

A loose chuck lets the bit wobble, wander off your mark, and slip under load. Snug it, then tug the bit to check.

Direction — forward drives in, reverse backs out. Check it before every trigger pull.

Clutch — the numbered ring. It is not speed. It sets how hard the tool will twist before it gives up and clicks, so a low number stops you burying a screw.

Speed 1 or 2 — 1 is slow with more turning force, for driving screws. 2 is fast with less, for drilling holes.

A screw does not slide into wood. It shoves the fibers apart to make room for itself.

It splits. There is not enough wood beside the screw to absorb being pushed aside, so the board opens along the grain.

A pilot hole takes that material out first. You will do this deliberately on scrap today, both ways, and watch the difference.

What You're Graded On

  • A frame that is assembled and square, cut and fastened by you
  • Working safely without being reminded — glasses, clamping, hands clear, asking first
  • Your station and shared tools returned to the state you found them

What You're Graded On

A gap at the last corner does not cost you points today. Not being able to say why it is there does.

Build

Work at the pace of the demonstration. Nothing here is a race, and no step starts until your instructor has shown it.


Task 1: Set Up Safely

  1. Safety glasses on before you enter the machine area.
  2. Secure sleeves, drawstrings, and long hair. Phone away.
  3. Walk your station: know where the power switch is, where your offcuts go, and where the shop broom lives.

Task 2: Cut Four Pieces at 45 Degrees

  1. Confirm the saw is set to 45 degrees before your first cut.
  2. Seat the stock flat against the fence and clamp it. Do not hold a short piece with your hand near the blade — ask instead.
  3. Hands outside the marked zone. Both of them, every cut.
  4. Cut, then let the blade stop completely before you lift it or reach for the piece.
  5. Repeat until you have four pieces matching the cut list, with opposite ends angled toward each other.

Task 3: Dry-Fit and Clamp Square

  1. Lay the four pieces into a square with no fasteners. Push the corners together.
  2. Check each corner against a square, then clamp the assembly so it cannot shift.
  3. Note any gap now, before it is screwed in place. Write down which corner it is at.

Task 4: Split a Board on Purpose

  1. Take a scrap offcut. Drive a construction screw straight into it, near the end, with no pilot hole.
  2. Watch what the wood does. Stop as soon as it opens.
  3. Now drill a pilot hole in a second scrap and drive an identical screw beside it.
  4. Keep both pieces. You are describing this in your reflection.

Task 5: Pilot and Fasten the Frame

  1. Use the pilot jig at each corner. Drill on speed 2, straight in, with steady pressure.
  2. Switch to the impact driver for the construction screws. Confirm forward before you pull the trigger.
  3. Drive until the head seats flush. Do not keep going once it stops sinking.
  4. Unclamp and check the frame against a square one more time.

Task 6: Reset the Space

  1. Offcuts and scrap cleared to where they belong.
  2. Saw table and work surface brushed down.
  3. Bits out of chucks, drivers and clamps returned, batteries back on the charger.
  4. Have your instructor confirm the station before you leave it.

Checkpoint

Set your frame on a flat surface and look at the last corner you fastened. Does it close, or is there a visible gap?

Either answer is fine today. What matters is that you can point at the corner and say what would have to change for it to close — a saw setting, a piece length, or how firmly the stock was held against the fence.

Reflection

Answer these on your own. Reflections are individual, even when the rest of the session was team work.

  1. You drove one screw with no pilot hole and one with a pilot hole. Describe what the wood did in each case, and explain why the pilot hole changes the outcome — in terms of what the screw is physically doing to the fibers.
  2. Your frame either closed square or left a gap. Say which, and name the one specific thing you would do differently on your next cut to close it.
  3. Before a student uses the miter saw without supervision, what should they have to demonstrate — not merely say? Name one thing, and say how an instructor would know they had done it.
