If Something Goes Wrong

Stop the job. Diagnose using Session 10's symptom list before assuming anything.

A Failed First Attempt Isn't a Failed Session

Diagnosing a real problem, correctly, is worth as much as a clean first cut — same philosophy as Unit 1's Mismatch Activity.

Measure what actually matters: outer dimensions, pocket depth, hole location.

A Mismatch Isn't a Failed Session

A part that came out 2 mm undersized with a correct diagnosis is worth more than a part that happened to come out right for reasons nobody can name.

Build

Step 1: Final Checklist Pass

Walk your Session 10 pre-cut checklist one more time against your actual Session 12 job file.


Step 2: Load, Secure, Zero

Load your stock, confirm it's fully secured, and verify your zero point — per Session 4's protocols.


Step 3: Run the Job, Supervised

Run the job start to finish. Stay with the machine the entire time.


Step 4: Remove Tabs and Inspect

Once the job finishes, remove any tabs by hand and take a first look at your part. Check for tear-out, tab marks not fully cleaned up, or any surface roughness, and note anything you find.


Step 5: Measure Your Part

Calipers, real readings, not estimates. Do this at your bench while other teams are on the machine.

Step 6: Diagnose Any Mismatch

For any dimension that differs from your design by more than a small amount, use Sessions 7–10's concepts to explain why — offset, step-down, material behavior, or something else.


Step 7: Unit Recap

List the five main skills from this 4-week arc: client communication, materials (subtractive and additive), CAD, CAM, and safety certification. For each, write one sentence on how it showed up in your practice build specifically.

Before you leave the machine, confirm:

  • You stayed with the job for its entire run
  • You have the physical part in hand, whatever its condition
  • If anything went wrong, you have a first-guess diagnosis written down, not just "it didn't work"
  • Real measured dimensions in your table, not estimates
  • A specific diagnosis for any mismatch — not "it just came out wrong"
  • All five Manufacturing Foundations skills named in your recap

  1. Did anything go wrong during the cut? If so, give your first-guess diagnosis using Session 10's symptom list. If nothing went wrong, name the symptom you were most watching for.

  3. This is the last session before a real client brief arrives. What's one thing about your own process you want to do differently once the stakes are real?
