CNC Safety Certification

From Planning to the Machine

The last three sessions were about clients, materials, and processes.

Today, before anyone touches the router: how to use it without getting hurt.

Yes — Unit 1 covered general shop tooling. This is different.

A CNC router spins its bit far faster than most hand tools, and it moves on its own once a job starts — you're not holding it, it's running a program.

Six Protocols

This is a hard gate, same as bungee safety was for the Launcher Project.

1. Never Reach Into the Cutting Area

Not while the spindle is powered, ever — not "just to brush away chips."

2. Confirm the Material Is Actually Secured

Clamped, screwed, or held down — checked by you, not assumed because someone else set it up.

3. Verify Zero/Home Before Every Job

Not just the first job of the day. A wrong zero point can send the bit straight into a clamp, the spoilboard, or the machine itself at full speed.

4. Know Where the E-Stop Is

Before you press start — not while something is already going wrong.

5. Never Leave a Running Job Unattended

A bit can break, material can shift, dust collection can fail — someone needs to be watching.

6. Eye Protection and Dust Collection, Every Time

Some of our materials — MDF especially — produce fine dust that's a real respiratory hazard, not just a mess.

  1. Instructor demonstrates the machine
  2. You practice under direct supervision
  3. You take a certification quiz

The Certification Quiz

Passing score: 100%.

The Certification Quiz

Repeatable until you pass — same standard as Unit 1's tool certification. Partial safety knowledge isn't safe knowledge.

Your Specific Machine

[VERIFY] — the exact zeroing procedure, E-stop location, and startup sequence depend on your specific machine (ShopBot Buddy vs. Makera). Confirm these with your instructor before relying on them.

Two Things to Remember

This certifies you on this machine, not "CNC in general."

A second machine with different controls means going through this again — same rule Unit 1 established for general shop tools.

The machine doesn't know when you're not paying attention.

It will run the program exactly as written whether or not anyone's watching — that's exactly why unattended operation is on this list.

Step 1: Machine Demonstration

Watch your instructor's full demonstration of the machine before attempting anything yourself — startup, zeroing, running a job, and emergency stop.


Step 2: Supervised Practice

Under direct supervision, practice locating the E-stop, checking that stock is properly secured, and verifying a zero point.


Step 3: Record Your Protocol Notes

For each of the six protocols, write down one specific action you'd actually take because of it:

Step 4: Certification Quiz

A quiz on today's protocols, administered by your instructor. Passing score is 100%, repeatable until you get there — this is a hard gate: no team begins hands-on CAM work without every member certified.

  • You watched the full demonstration
  • You practiced under direct supervision
  • You passed the certification quiz at 100%

Reflection

Answer these on your own. Reflections are individual, even when the rest of the session was team work.

  1. You already hold a general shop safety certification from Unit 1. Why does this machine need its own separate certification instead of being covered by that one?
  2. Session 5 moves to CAD, where you'll model panels that have to fit together. Now that you've seen this machine run, name one thing about how it cuts that you think should change how you model a part.
