Challenge Set 10

Unlocks after Activity 1.20. Four code challenges and a question set.

What This Set Is For

All four are Activity 1.20's four patterns, used on data somebody actually cares about. Nothing here needs anything the course has not taught — the work is choosing which pattern answers which question, and starting each one at a value that cannot lie to you.

Two of these compute an average, and both will hand you a wrong one if you let them. Whole number divided by whole number is a whole number in C#, and :F1 will print that wrong answer with a decimal point on it so it looks finished.

Three Briefs and a Blank Page

The first three work the usual way: you get a result somebody wants, and you write the requirements list first — input, calculate, output, and every decision you had to make yourself.

The fourth one is different. There is no customer and no brief, and what it does is entirely your call.

If the requirements-list idea is unfamiliar, read it once here: How to Read a Brief, in Challenge Set 1.

The Challenges

Hottest Hour is one star and is a single pattern — running max — on its own, the gentlest way into what this whole set is about. Step Tracker is three patterns in one loop and turns on the average. Savings Goal is the odd one out — nobody knows how many weeks it takes, including the program, so it is the only challenge in this set that wants a while. The Open Brief is three stars for the blank page, not for the code; it is the only page in the quarter that does not tell you what to build.

These are options, not a checklist. Pick whichever combination gets you to what the dropbox asks for — Hottest Hour is the easiest way in if Step Tracker's three patterns at once feels like too much.

The Question Set

Ten minutes again, the same as Question Set 4. Two of its six questions are the ones this part keeps making: the counter that was written as an accumulator, and the average that was quietly truncated.

Which Homework These Feed

Question Set 5 is its own drop, due after this activity. The four code challenges are not due yet — they join Part 3's pool alongside Challenge Set 8 and Challenge Set 9.

Two of that pool were already collected after Activity 1.19. A later drop asks for three more, so anything you finish here counts toward it.

The dropbox says how many. This page only says what is available.
